SUBMISSIONS
Submissions for the 9th Art and Olfaction Awards now closed. If you submitted, make sure to get your samples in the mail as soon as possible. The deadline for receipt of samples is December 10, 2022.
Next steps for us are to process all the submission samples, and prepare them for our complex and anonymized judging process. Judging begins in January, 2023.
We will announce the finalists in each category at Esxence in Milan, in March 2023.
HOW TO SUBMIT
Note: Submissions for the 9th awards are now closed. This information is for archival purposes only.
There is a two part process for submissions:
STEP 1. Click the big green button above
STEP 2. Fill out the online application form and pay the fee.
STEP 3. Send 20ml of the perfume in the mail.
Once you fill out the online application form, we send instructions on how to submit the physical package within 24 hours. Plan for shipping delays and do not delay sending it in. Once received, we decant your submission into blind vials, and affix an anonymous tracking number to tbe vial.
All submissions are judged anonymously except in the Sadakichi Award category.

SUBMISSION CATEGORIES
We have several open submission categories for the Art and Olfaction Awards, which reflect the varieties of practice in independent perfumery. Please click the category below to learn about qualifiers and rules for each category, or email us at [email protected] for more information.
Independent Category
For brands that employed an external perfumer or fragrance house to create the submission's formula, which was then released under the brand's name.
Sadakichi Award (Experimental)
For artists and experimental or creative practitioners who make unconventional use of scent, that takes it out of the domain of traditional perfumery.
Artisan Category
For brands that are owned or co-owned by the perfumer, who initiated and created the submission's formula in-house, released under the brand's name.
Aftel Award for Handmade Perfume
For perfumes that were 100% perfumer-created, in-house, with no use of outsourced compounding or expansion at any stage of the process.
DISCRETIONARY AWARDS
In addition to our open submission categories, we also present discretionary awards - presented on a yearly basis to one person or project per award. Learn more about these awards, below.
Contribution to Scent Culture Award
Given on an annual basis to an outstanding person who makes significant contributions to public awareness of artisan, independent and experimental practices with scent on an international scale.
Septimus Piesse Visionary Award
Inaugurated in 2019, this award is given on an as-needed basis to an outstanding person showing proof of exceptional vision with regards to how scent is used, developed, or imagined.
