Seven Questions with Bruno Fazzolari
Name: Bruno Fazzolari
Company: Bruno Fazzolari
Finalist Perfume: Lampblack
Category: Artisan
1. Where are you, right now?
My studio in San Francisco's Mission District
2. What was the last thing you searched for, in Google?
John Soane Museum.
3. What's a song you are listening to, these days?
Journey in Satchidananda, by Alice Coltrane.
4. What led you to perfumery?
I can't say that this was a rational or deliberate choice. Scent has always been extremely compelling—it evokes visual experiences for me. At first I explored the raw materials of fragrance simply for the pleasure of smelling them. But very quickly I found myself venturing into deeper and deeper water. Painting and scent become a joint venture—each inspiring and informing the other.
5. What excites you about your finalist perfume?
Lampblack has a lucid light/dark, fruity/earthy aura that still surprises me. The materials work their own magic to create some amazing colors.
6. Name three scents (other than your own) that you are a big fan of.
Patou Vacances, Knize 10, the original formulation of Diorissimo.
7. If you could give a few words of advice to a young person trying to do something in the world, what would you say?
Keep it simple. Use plain language. Write clear topic sentences.
