Seven Questions with Cristiano Canali
Name: Cristiano Canali
Company: Cristiano Canali
Finalist Perfume: Magnolia Esxentialis
Category: Artisan
1. Where are you, right now?
Planet Earth and seems it will be my final destination.
2. What was the last thing you searched for, in Google?
Rent Studio Paris, because I am moving there
Grand Hotel Budapest, because I cannot wait more to watch it
and how to build a beehive, because we would like to build a few in the Dolomites
3. What's a song you are listening to, these days?
During my days I cannot stop having my amplifier on:
Spoek Mothambo, Dan Deacon, Keith Fullerton Whitman, The Heliocentrics, Gonjasufi, Oval, Cornelius, Lee Morgan, Sierra Leone Refugees Allstars, Colin Stetson, David Lynch are my recent plays [in] iTunes, but this is not counting the decent number of vinyls, mostly classical, jazz or analogue instruments.
4. What led you/your company to perfumery?
I see a great connection between pharmacy and perfumery. The use of natural derivates is in the origin of both: The respect for the raw materials and the study of proportions are what make the difference between a good and a bad formula.
Glassware, pipettes, chemistry, botanical extractions all lead to a final product: In pharmacy it is curing the body, in perfumery it is healing the soul.
5. What excites you about Magnolia Esxentialis?
The fragrance has been awarded in the open contest of Exence in Milan, spread throughout the internet and now I am honored to present it in the US and to a global pool of experts.
The excitement comes from the fragrance itself, a real creative challenge where the brief (Renaissance of perfumery made in Italy) is fulfilled by combining synergistic ingredients in a very short formula.
6. Name three scents (other than your own) that you are a big fan of.
If I really have to choose I would say:
Guerlain's Apreé l’Ondée
Serge Lutens' Borneo
Frederic Malle's Une Fleur de Cassie
7. If you could give a few words of advice to a young person trying to do something in the world, what would you say?
Each experience that brought you here can be recorded as good or bad. It’s just perception. Whatever it was is now leading you somewhere: Grasp the meaning and keep on evolving.
