Seven Questions with Lisa Fong
Name: Lisa Fong
Company: Artemisia Natural Perfumes
Finalist Perfume: Golden Hour
Category: Artisan
1. Where are you, right now?
In front of my computer at home in Oakland
2. What was the last thing you searched for, in Google?
Etsy, Facebook, very dull
3. What’s a song you are listening to, these days?
I have been listening to Erykah Badu's Next Lifetime
4. What led you to perfumery?
I wanted to understand what perfume is about. It was such a mystery, I didn't know what I liked or disliked. I read books and online reviews and became intrigued by natural perfume after reading Mandy Aftel's Essence and Alchemy. Once I experienced natural essences, I was hooked.
5. What excites you about ‘Golden Hour’?
Most of my attempts to make a tuberose fragrance were disappointing, it came out too sweet and gooey. I then tried to bring out the green notes of tuberose by blending it with angelica root. I loved the effect, and from that grew "Golden Hour."
6. Name three scents (other than your own) that you are a big fan of.
I can only say that I love the essences of rose, jasmine, and vetiver.
Most perfumes do not work on my skin, they smell too strong. If I wear any fragrance, it is my own, because I have made it to smell nice on my skin.
7. If you could give a few words of advice to a young person trying to do something of note in the world, what would you say?
Nothing comes easy. You must always practice and concentrate hard on what you are doing. Inspiration and creativity will come in brief moments, but it is the hard work that allows your ideas to come to fruition.
